I'd heard my share of horror stories about the physics department at UB and was expecting something along those lines, but Sen's class surprised me. Unless wiley+clickers are now Dept.-wide policy I don't see him pulling a 180 on his stance about extra course costs. For 101 he does expect you to know how to do basic trig and intermediate arithmetic+algebra by hand, so that's something to keep in mind. As long as you take the class seriously in kind (don't blow off lectures/recitations, do the homework) you can do very well. He's a tough professor and ran the class at an insane pace, but I never felt like he was unfair and he definitely takes teaching seriously. No aids other than the course calculator and the provided formula sheet may be used. (One of his research areas is improving early STEM education outcomes, so his opinion is probably backed up by hard data.) He used a free online textbook and used free software developed by him & his research team for administering homework (and later quizzes & exams after the COVID switch.) Force and motion, conservation of energy and momentum, fluids, properties of soft matter and thermal physics with applications taken from the life sciences. For multiple choice questions, circle one answer only. He was adamant about eliminating extra costs for students as he feels such things are barriers to student performance.
